When a Mac battery actually needs replacing

Apple rates most modern MacBook batteries for 1000 charge cycles before they are considered consumed, and older models from 2009 and earlier for 300 to 500 cycles. A battery that has passed its cycle rating will still charge, but it holds progressively less capacity and eventually swells, which is the point where it starts pushing the trackpad up and cracking the bottom case.

How do I check my MacBook battery cycle count and health?

Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information and select Power in the sidebar. The Cycle Count and Condition lines are listed under Battery Information. A condition of Normal with a cycle count below the model rating means the battery is fine. Service Recommended, Replace Soon or Replace Now means the battery has lost enough capacity that macOS is flagging it. A cycle count above 1000 on any Retina MacBook is past the designed service life even if the condition still reads Normal.

Is a swollen MacBook battery dangerous?

Yes, and it should be dealt with immediately. A swollen lithium polymer cell is under internal pressure and can rupture if it is punctured or compressed. Stop charging the machine, power it off, do not close the lid hard and do not press on the trackpad. Bring it in rather than shipping it, because swollen cells are restricted for air freight. Swelling also lifts the trackpad and can crack the bottom case and the display glass, so replacing it early avoids a much larger bill.

Does replacing the battery reset the cycle count?

Yes. A new cell reports its own cycle count starting from zero, and on MacBooks with Apple T2 or Apple silicon the battery is paired to the system so the health reporting resets with it. If a machine still shows a high cycle count after a battery swap, the old cell was reinstalled or the replacement was a used pull rather than a new battery.
