iMac and Mac mini power supplies and how they fail
Desktop Macs use an internal power supply that converts mains voltage down to the 12V rail the logic board runs on. Those units age, and the electrolytic capacitors inside them are usually the first thing to go, which produces a machine that will not power on at all, one that powers on only after several attempts, or one that shuts down under load.
How do I know if my iMac power supply has failed?
Remove the rear housing and look at the diagnostic LEDs on the logic board next to the memory. LED1 should light as soon as the machine is plugged in, before the power button is pressed, because it confirms the power supply is delivering standby power. If LED1 stays dark with a known good mains lead, the power supply is the suspect. If LED1 lights but LED2 never does when the button is pressed, the board is not coming out of standby and the fault has moved to the logic board.
Can a Mac power supply be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes in many cases. Bulged or leaking capacitors on the secondary side are a common and repairable failure, and replacing them with correctly rated parts restores the unit. Where the switching controller or the transformer has failed, or where there is scorching on the board, replacing the whole supply is the safe answer. We test the rails under load rather than just at idle, because a failing supply often measures fine until it is asked for current.
Is it safe to open an iMac to reach the power supply?
The supply holds a mains level charge in its capacitors after the machine is unplugged, so it is not a part to poke at casually. It needs to be discharged properly before anything is touched. If you are not equipped for that, bring the machine in. Walk-ins are welcome with no appointment.
