iPad repairs and how the construction affects them

iPads are built around a heavily glued glass front, and on most models the digitiser and the LCD are separate layers rather than a bonded assembly, which changes the repair completely depending on whether the glass alone is cracked or the display underneath has failed. Battery replacement on an iPad also means separating that glued glass, which is why it takes longer than the equivalent iPhone job.

My iPad glass is cracked but the display works, is that cheaper to fix?

On most iPad and iPad Air models the digitiser glass is a separate part from the LCD, so if the picture is perfect and only the glass is broken, replacing the glass alone is the smaller job. On iPad Pro models the glass and the panel are laminated together like an iPhone, so a cracked front means a full display assembly regardless of whether the picture is fine.

Why does an iPad battery replacement cost more than a phone battery?

The iPad battery is bonded to the rear housing with large adhesive strips and sits under the logic board and the speakers, so the entire front glass has to be heated and cut free first, then every internal component removed before the cell can be released. It is several hours of careful work rather than the twenty minutes a phone takes, and the front adhesive has to be replaced and cured afterwards.

Is a bent iPad worth repairing?

A slight bend can sometimes be flattened enough for a new screen to seat and seal, but once the aluminium is creased the new glass will not bond evenly and it will crack again at the same point. We measure the chassis flatness before quoting so we are not selling you a screen that will fail. Where the bend is too far gone, a buy-back against a replacement unit is usually the better value.
