Mac Pro(1 part)
Mac graphics cards and discrete GPU failures
Discrete graphics appear in the Mac Pro, in the 27-inch iMac and in the higher specification 15-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. On the MacBook the GPU is soldered to the logic board, so a GPU failure there is a board-level job, while the Mac Pro and some iMac models take a card or a removable MXM module.
What are the signs of a failing Mac GPU?
Coloured vertical lines or blocks across the display, artefacts that appear before macOS even loads, a screen that goes black under 3D load while the machine stays running, random restarts during video work, and distorted output on an external monitor as well as the internal panel. If the artefacts are visible in the boot screen before macOS starts, that rules out software and points at the GPU or its memory.
Can a soldered MacBook Pro GPU be repaired?
A reball or reflow is sometimes offered elsewhere as a fix, but it is a temporary one because the underlying die or its solder has already been through thermal cycling that will repeat. Where the failure is in the GPU power rails rather than the chip itself, a component-level repair is genuinely durable. We test the rails before advising, so you know which situation you are in rather than paying for a repair that lasts a month.
Can I upgrade the graphics in my Mac?
The Mac Pro accepts supported PCIe cards, and the 2013 cylinder Mac Pro takes matched pairs of proprietary modules. Intel iMacs with an MXM module can sometimes take a higher module from the same generation. No MacBook can have its graphics upgraded, and Apple silicon Macs use the GPU built into the chip, so an external Thunderbolt enclosure is not supported on them either.
