Why Mac fans run loud and when the fan is the problem

A fan that runs constantly is usually reporting a thermal problem rather than causing one. Dust packed into the heat sink fins, thermal paste that has dried out after several years, or a blocked exhaust vent all force the fan to its maximum speed long before the fan bearing itself is at fault. A genuinely failed fan sounds different, with a rattle, a grinding note or a click that changes with the angle of the machine.

Why is my MacBook fan always at full speed?

The most common causes are a heat sink clogged with dust, thermal compound that has degraded, a runaway process pinning the CPU, or a failed temperature sensor reporting a false reading. Open Activity Monitor and sort by CPU to rule out software first. If the machine is idle and cool to the touch but the fans are still at full speed, the SMC is reading a faulty sensor or the fan tachometer wire is broken, and both need the machine opening up.

Do MacBook Airs with Apple silicon have fans?

No. The M1, M2 and M3 MacBook Air are passively cooled with no fan at all, so any noise from one of those machines is coming from the speakers or from something loose in the chassis. The 13-inch and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, the Mac mini, the Mac Studio and the iMac all have active cooling and can be serviced for fan noise.

How often should thermal paste be replaced on a Mac?

Every three to five years is a sensible interval on a machine used heavily, and sooner if the Mac is throttling under sustained load. Signs that the paste has failed are a machine that hits its thermal limit within a minute of a video export, a chassis too hot to rest a hand on, and fans at maximum during light work. A clean and repaste with fresh compound typically drops sustained temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.
