Mac chargers, wattage and why the wrong one causes problems

Apple has shipped MagSafe 1, MagSafe 2, USB-C and MagSafe 3 chargers, and within USB-C alone the adapters range from 29W up to 140W. A Mac will run on a lower wattage adapter, but it will charge slowly or not at all under load, which is one of the most common reasons a machine is brought in as a suspected battery fault.

Can I use a lower wattage charger with my MacBook?

It will not damage the Mac, but it will not keep up. A 30W adapter on a 16-inch MacBook Pro under heavy load will let the battery drain while it is plugged in, because the machine draws more than the adapter can supply. Check the wattage printed on the adapter body against what the model shipped with. If your Mac charges overnight but loses charge during work, the adapter is undersized rather than the battery being worn.

How do I know if my charger or the Mac is at fault?

Hold Option, open the Apple menu, choose System Information and select Power. The AC Charger section lists the wattage the Mac is actually receiving. If it shows nothing with the adapter connected, try the other USB-C ports one at a time. If one port works and another does not, the fault is the I/O board rather than the charger. If no port sees the adapter and a known good adapter behaves the same way, the charging circuit on the board needs looking at.

Are third party chargers safe for a Mac?

A properly certified USB-C Power Delivery adapter from a reputable maker is fine and negotiates the correct voltage with the Mac. Uncertified cheap adapters are the ones that cause trouble, because they can push the wrong voltage and take out the charging IC on the board, which is a far more expensive repair than a genuine adapter.
