Mac Pro parts compatibility by model, A-number and EMC

The Mac Pro line covers three very different designs: the aluminium tower with PCIe expansion, the cylindrical 2013 model, and the modular 2019 and Apple Silicon towers that returned to a large expandable enclosure. Parts are entirely design-specific, so identifying which Mac Pro you own is essential before ordering. The table below lists each Mac Pro we supply parts for with its A-number, EMC number, model identifier, year and processor.

Warning: These parts are model-specific. Confirm your exact A-number or EMC number against the correct row below before ordering. The wrong logic board, display, or battery will not fit.

How do I identify my Mac Pro?

The cylindrical 2013 Mac Pro is unmistakable, while the tower models carry a model number beginning with A on the housing and report a model identifier in System Information. Match that A-number or identifier to a row in the table above to find the correct parts for your machine.

Are Mac Pro tower and cylinder parts interchangeable?

No. The 2013 cylinder used a unique thermal core and custom GPU boards, the classic towers used standard PCIe cards and removable drive sleds, and the 2019 modular Mac Pro introduced the MPX module system. None of these interchange, so confirm your exact model before ordering.

Can I upgrade graphics or storage in a Mac Pro?

The classic towers and the 2019 modular Mac Pro were designed for expansion, with accessible PCIe slots, drive bays and RAM, whereas the 2013 cylinder used proprietary GPU modules that limit upgrade options. Match your model in the table to understand which upgrade paths apply.

Mac Pro components and what is still serviceable

The Mac Pro is the most serviceable machine Apple makes. The 2019 and 2023 tower takes standard registered memory, PCIe cards and MPX modules, the 2013 cylinder uses proprietary but removable GPU and SSD modules, and the 2009 to 2012 tower accepts ordinary drives, cards and processors, which is why those machines are still in daily use.

What memory does the Mac Pro take?

The 2019 and 2023 Mac Pro use DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs across twelve slots, and Apple specifies matched kits installed in a particular slot order for full bandwidth. The 2013 cylinder takes four ECC DDR3 modules. The 2009 to 2012 tower takes ECC DDR3 in banks that depend on whether it is the single or dual processor tray. Filling the slots in the wrong order costs real performance even when all the memory is recognised.

Can I upgrade the processor in an older Mac Pro?

On the 2009 to 2012 tower yes. The processor tray can be removed and the Xeon replaced with a higher clocked chip from the same generation, and on the 2009 model a firmware update to the 2010 version is needed first. The 2013 cylinder also has a socketed Xeon under the heat sink. The 2019 tower processor is socketed but Apple does not supply it as a service part.

Why does my Mac Pro not see a PCIe card?

Check the card is in a slot with enough lanes for it, that any supplementary power connector is fitted using the correct Apple cable rather than a generic PCIe lead, and that the card has Mac firmware where it is required. In System Information under PCI Cards, a card that shows as present but with a driver not installed is a software issue, while a card that does not appear at all is a slot, power or firmware issue.
