Butterfly keyboards and why they fail
Apple used the butterfly mechanism from 2015 to 2019 across the 12-inch MacBook, the 2016 to 2019 MacBook Pro and the 2018 to 2019 MacBook Air. It has only 0.5mm of travel and a hinge that a single crumb can jam, which produces the repeated characters, missing keystrokes and dead keys those models became known for. The 2018 revision added a silicone membrane that reduced the failures without eliminating them.
The late 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro was the first model back on the scissor Magic Keyboard, with 1mm of travel and far better debris tolerance, and every model since uses it. If you are choosing between two used machines, that single difference is worth more than most spec bumps.
